Cognitive Performance Test (CPT) 2018 Revised Manual and Practice Model (Mayo Clinic Staff Only)

This course is only open to OT staff who work for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. It is not open to the public.

This course presents the neurocognitive basis of the Cognitive performance Test (CPT) and its evidence-based practice model.  It includes its use in functional diagnosis and in predicting capacity for IADL/ADL, independent living and safety.  New research that differentiates CPT levels from Allen levels will be presented including outcome studies in driving and differential diagnosis for mild versus major neurocognitive disorders (i.e., dementia).  Participants will use the CPT Revised Manual to review each subtask protocol with discussion, video case examples, and role play.  Participants will be able to discuss CPT evaluation in their clinics and practice applications for their clients with respect to diagnosis and prognosis.


Theressa Burns, OTR, is the Occupational Therapist Clinical Specialist at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC).  She is the developer of the Cognitive Performance Test (CPT), an evidence-based assessment of functional cognition.  Ms. Burns has 30 years of experience in dementia, psychiatric care and research and has worked with individuals from early to late stage disability.  Her work has been presented at national and international conferences and published in books and peer reviewed Journals since 1990.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the neurocognitive base of the CPT as a working memory and executive function measure
  • Identify DSM 5 cognitive and functional criteria for misd vs major neurocognitive disorders
  • Recall CPT Revised Manual and administration protocols for each subtask
  • Identify and recall CPT Profile interventions for IADL, ADL, independent livng and safety
  • Recognize outcome studies that support the CPT for functional diagnosis and intervention
